THERAPY FOR CHILDREN, TEENS & FAMILIES
IN ORANGE COUNTY, LONG BEACH & ONLINE IN CALIFORNIA
You’re concerned about your child or teen. They’re not their typical, happy-ish self.
You see that they’re struggling and you don’t know how to help.
Child or teen therapy can be the support you’re looking for. Whether it’s in individual child or teen therapy, coaching for you as a parent, or family therapy, there are times when outside support is incredibly helpful.
What is therapy with children and teens like?
We think of therapy for a child or teen like tutoring for their emotions/thoughts/actions, a support to help them grow through a difficulty. It’s also like therapy for adults, but developmentally appropriate.
The therapist builds trust by connecting with your child or teen, showing genuine interest in what’s important to them and gaining an understanding of how they feel and what they think. The therapist works toward goals that focus on helping them express and manage their feelings, thoughts and actions.
For younger children –
exploration and learning includes a mix of play with toys, imaginative play, games and drawing. A parent or caregiver is likely to be involved with the therapy.
For teens –
the therapist may invite the teen to share music they listen to, or go for “walk and talk therapy” during a session. Because teens have a greater need for privacy to trust the therapist, parents are less involved but not excluded.
If needed, parent coaching or family therapy can supplement the individual therapy.
Children and teens learn constantly.
Therapy at SRP can help them learn about themselves, heal and grow so that they become more confident, connected and resilient.
